The custom of giving a ring as a token of betrothal may have originated with the Romans.  The prospective husband gave his bride a ring, a symbol of the cycle of life and of eternity, at the formal betrothal ceremony.  By the 15th century the diamond became part of the ritual of weddings for royalty and the wealthy.

Art Deco engagement rings of the 1920s and 1930s often had clean lines and a geometric design.  Fine millegrain setting points continued to be popular in this period because these small setting points reflected the light, enhancing the brilliance of the diamonds.  Platinum engagement rings and white gold engagement rings, set with diamonds, sapphires or rubies, were popular.

Platinum was frequently used in jewellery from 1900, just as the Edwardian era was beginning.  The strength of platinum meant that the size of the ring settings could be reduced, giving the designs a bright, contemporary feel.  Although engagement rings were predominantly made as platinum engagement rings, traditionalists continued to purchase yellow gold engagement rings, which had been so popular in the preceding Victorian-era. 

Stylish diamond-set shoulders complemented the low-set centre diamond.

By the Victorian era it was established that a bride could expect two rings:  a gem-set engagement ring, and the actual wedding ring, which was usually a slim gold band.  

The variety of engagement ring designs was immense, although traditional diamond cluster rings and gemstone and diamond half-hoop rings were the most popular.  

Diamonds became more accessible after 1870 with the discovery of diamond mines on the African continent.  Diamonds symbolized marital fidelity, rubies symbolized love, and these stones, and others such as sapphires, can be seen in many Victorian engagement rings.  See the Victorian Style Engagement Rings page.
